It has come to our attention at Sam Flax that the phrase ‘supported by the Georgia Council for the Arts (GCA) may soon cease to follow Atlanta’s National Public Radio(NPR) announcements if the $17.8 billion budget passed by the House Appropriations Committee passes the Senate. In the coming days, the Senate will vote to pass the 2011 budget, which nearly eliminates all major funding of the GCA, to Governor Sonny Perdue for approval.

Over the years I have really grown attached to hearing that line following my favorite NPR programs, but I had no idea how much the GCA actually does for Georgia. Since 1968, they have been funding programs for everyone from the High Museum of Art down to the smallest county cultural presentations in Georgia.

It seems like a short sighted decision to eliminate the GCA and therefore forego over $800,000 in funding from the National Endowment of the Arts as well as $200,000 in regional arts funding. It’s difficult to understand why legislators would like to make Georgia the only state that is ineligible for national funding.

A proposed piece of legislation, HB1049, would actually help fund arts programs at the county level if approved but it doesn’t seem to be getting much attention from legislators here at the end of the session. That bill proposes allowing counties to hold referendums to determine if residents would like to allocate up to a penny of their sales tax to funding arts and cultural programs. We still wouldn’t have a central arts council, and we still wouldn’t receive national funding but we might be able to keep some of the programs that counties currently sponsor.

As an art and design store, our business depends upon a thriving arts community. Many of our clients have made use of funding from the GCA; the GCA is also a client. In that respect we are an example of how public funding translates into commerce. The GCA estimates that the 1.3 million or so dollars they use for funding has an economic impact of $387 million dollars in Georgia, which is quite a return on investment.

Organizations like The Center for Puppetry Arts may struggle without this great source of funding. Private donors will need to increase amounts given to these organizations significantly in order to help. Still, the hardest thing to watch will be children, missing out on opportunities to discover the arts through publicly funded programs that will continue to exist in every other US state. Corporate funding does not often benefit these and the many smaller community programs in Georgia.

Ahh...the Embody chair

After much debate, I have decided to get an Embody chair from Herman Miller. With the huge selection of chairs from different Ergonomic Office Firms like Herman Miller, Steelcase, and Humanscale the choice was not easy. The classic Aeron chair from Herman Miller is definitely our best seller, but personally during my period as a furniture salesmen I had been a fan of Humanscale's Freedom & Liberty Chairs. That is, until Herman Miller released the Embody chair in October of 2008. Now that I spend most of my time sitting down in front of the computer working on blogs and websites a tight neck and sore shoulders have become frequent. So, I'll have my chair soon and I'll let you know why it's so wonderful!

Know what size your pictures are going to be and whether you want them in a landscape (short side high) or portrait (long side high) layout.
How many images will you be starting with and how many do you hope to end with?
Is this going to be your permanent portfolio or is this going to be a leave-behind?

Do you want your pictures in a box, a case, a binder or a screwpost portfolio?

Keel's Simple Diary

So.. we just got in our first shipment of the Keel's Simple Diary from Taschen Press. I had read the reviews and looked at all of the images and ideas surrounding this new product, so I had an idea that it would be pretty cool. I must say that it has surpassed my expectations.

I am sure that many of you are like me. I have never had the time, energy or really even the desire to keep a diary. My opinion of diaries is certainly changing now because the Simple Diary is just that, simple. Every day you are given questions.. some in the form of multiple choice, some fill in the blank and others in a similar format.. to reflect- and smile- about your day.

Rather than letting your frustration about your day explode onto a piece of paper, the humorous questions and responses provided in the Simple Diary add a positive structure to your diary entries. I know, it sounds confusing... I think an example might help:

Care of Brushes

Never leave brushes in the cleaning jar facing down. This will bend and ruin your brushes. If you can't clean up right way, use a brush washing stand (Stainless Steel Brush Washing Kit or Silcoil Brush Cleaning Jar) which will suspend the brushes in the cleaning solution. However, it is best to clean your brushes immediately after use. Use a cleaning jar with a coil (Silcoil Brush Cleaning Jar) filled with an odorless product like Odorless Turpenoid or Gamsol Mineral Spirits. After cleaning your brushes, allow the sediment to sink to the bottom of the jar then pour off the clean solvent to be used again. As an alternative, you can use "The Master's" Brush Cleaner to preserve as well as clean your brushes. "The Master's" also makes a hand soap which is perfect for cleaning up after painting.

Stencil Making 101

Supplies Needed:

Original image
.005 Duralar
Stencil cutter
Tape
Glass
Canvas Panel
Montana Gold spray paint
Easy Tac

Select a two color image or an image that can be converted to black and white.
Tape original face-up on the underside of a piece of glass
Cut a piece of duralar or acetate to a manageable size and tape it on top of the glass over the original.
Using an xacto or stencil cutting heat tool, cut the outline of the image. This first layer will be painted in one of your two colors.
Remove this piece of plastic and tape a new one of the same size in place.
Cut out the detail portions of the original. Be aware of “islands” (spots of detail within other parts you may have already cut out). Make sure there is some plastic remaining to serve as a“bridge” to the islands. This second layer of the stencil will be in the second of your two colors.
Select a substrate and paint it any color you choose.
Spray the back of your first stencil layer with a light coat of Easy Tac and stick to your substrate.
Spray paint or daub with your first color.
Gently remove the stencil and allow the paint to dry (1 minute for Montana Gold, 30 minutes for acrylic).
Spray the back of your second stencil layer with easy tac stick to the substrate, carefully lining it up with the first layer.
Apply paint.
Enjoy your amazing new piece of original art and apply your stencil to anything that stands still!

Carol Ann Sherman was born and raised in Freehold, New Jersey. She received her education at Moore College of Art and the University of Miami, where she earned her fine arts degree with a major in painting.

Carol Ann has resided in South Florida and has established a busy life juggling career and art. By profession she is a licensed optician in the state of Florida. She paints with a water color group call the Women of Watercolor in Beach County.

Besides painting competitively, Carol Ann teches watercolor and drawing to adults at her studio as well as for the Palm Beach Adult Education Program.

Her paintings are characterized by a layering of color on color and tone on tone work is done on Yupo. Her major areas of importance are composition, line. color and shape. Carol Ann's style is one of contemporary representationalism. She sees life as one major work of art full of whimsy and lush color.

The Yupo surface is covered by a thin shiny coating which doesn't allow the paint to absorb into the paper. Therefore, the pigment remains as vivid on the paper as it is when it comes out of the tubes. It is a slippery surface but certainly a manageable one. She teaches a workshop called "Slippery When Wet" which gives students a better idea of the actual handling of the watercolors on Yupo.

Another specialty area in which Carol Ann works is watercolor batik on rice paper. Although it is quite different from Yupo, it is equally challenging.

Atlanta comes alive as the weather turns warm, the summer months arrive, and opportunities to get outdoors abound! From the Taste of Atlanta to the Dogwood Festival, Atlanta has some great “must see” outdoor events throughout the year. Just leave it to the sports station in town to produce THE family friendly, outdoor music festival of the summer…

On June 20th, Candler Park will once again be transformed into the hottest event of the year with 790 The Zone’s 3rd Annual MidSummer Music Fest. From filling the streets of Buckhead our inaugural year with 10,000 people, to great music last year featuring Drivin N Cryin and Blues Traveler, 2009 is set up to be the best year to date! New this year, 790 The Zone has created their own “stimulus plan” by making MidSummer Music Fest a FREE event!

The opportunity for Atlantans to come out to a city park, enjoy great music, hang out with close friends, and all for free? It’s going to be a blast…

HERE’S HOW TO WIN:

Create an event poster for the Mid Summer Music Fest at Candler Park and submit it to SAM FLAX. We will select 10 finalist who will continue on to an online voting session. About the Class...
In this class, students will learn the basic anatomy and terminology of a book and explore an ancient form of binding called a Japanese Stab Binding. It is a simple four-hole stitch with many variations that can be used for many functional items such as a journal or a portfolio. This technique will be taught and applied during the class (workshop) using supplied materials.

About the Teacher...
Emily Lester was born and raised in the Atlanta area. She started creating art before she could hold a pencil and has continued to pursue her passion. She mostly works in mixed media using a combination of book binding, photography and printmaking, but enjoys incorporating other materials. She is currently pursuing her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Kennesaw State University where she is set to graduate Cum Laude in May 2009.

"Sam Flax was my grandfather. I could tell you some very interesting stories about a lot of 20th century painters my grandfather did business with. He was very straight up and never exploited artists by taking their work in exchange for art supplies.

I met this artist a couple of months ago. His name is Steven Colucci. He is a former Mime, a protege of Marcel Marcoux, a painter, designer, very creative and interesting guy. So we were eating brunch and I told him my name and he started asking all these questions about who my father was and who my grandfather was and if I had id. So I showed him my business card and he started shaking and crying and hugging me because in 1967 he was the recipient of the Sam Flax Memorial Scholarship so he went to a great art school, and last weekend I went to his opening at the National Arts Club. Met his parents, was a big love fest. That what my grandfather was all about."
